Napoleon Bonaparte in Havana

Published: 2012.06.30 - 09:54:50   /  web@renciclopedia.icrt.cu  /  Ana Elizabeth Rodríguez

Napoleon Bonaparte in Havana The Napoleonic Museum in Havana was inaugurated on December 2nd, 1961, as part of an initiative by the Revolutionary government. The Museum is located in the house that belonged to Orestes Ferrara y Marino, an Italian lawyer who taught at the University of Havana. He came to Cuba as a young man in the late 1880s, fought in the War of Independence from Spain and became a General.

The house is situated across the University of Havana, on its right side. The exact address is: San Miguel 1599 esquina a Ronda/1599 San Miguel, on the corner of Ronda. The four-story house was built in 1928 in the style of a Florentine villa. Rumor has it they used materials diverted from the Capitol, which was under construction at the time. Ferrara was a government minister for President Gerardo Machado. The project was undertaken by the architects Govantes & Cavarroca, and the house was given the name “Dolce Dimora”, Italian for Sweet Home.

The Museum was set up with the Napoleonic collection of sugar trader and financier Julio Lobo who, among other businesses, owned 17 cane mills. It is the most important collection of paintings and objects from the Napoleonic period in Latin America.
