On the top of the Romanticism

Published: 2015.03.01 - 08:25:10   /  web@radiorebelde.icrt.cu  /  Traslated by: Yaima Márquez Zaragoza

On the top of the Romanticism The poet José Maria Heredia (1803-1839) is the leading figure of the Cuban romanticism. Linked to the first separatist conspiracies, he had to emigrate in 1823. In the United States he wrote his famous Oda al Niágara (Ode to the Niagara).

Later, he moved to Mexico, where he lived most of his long exile. In 1836, Heredia returned to Cuba. He died in the Aztec country, in 1839. His work influenced the revolutionary movement and the national literature. José Martí said that he “awakened in his soul, and in that of all Cuban people, the inextinguishable passion for freedom”. (Juan Blas Rodríguez)

The Exile's Hymn (Fragments)

Himno del desterrado
¡Dulce Cuba! En tu seno se miran
En su grado más alto y profundo,
La belleza del físico mundo,
Los horrores del mundo moral.

Te hizo el cielo la flor de la tierra;
Más tu fuerzas y destinos ignoras,
Y de España en el déspota adoras
Al demonio sangriento del mal.
