The Greats of History

Published: 2014.12.09 - 17:01:41   /  web@renciclopedia.icrt.cu  /  Traslated by: Yurgen Enamorado Lardoeyt

The Greats of HistoryWhenever we hear about Charlemagne or Carlos the Great, king of the Franks and founder of the Carlist Empire, we think on his great military and political triumphs, his efforts to civilize France and spread Christianity, and above all, the creation of the vast Roman Empire which had no equal in history.

But he was nothing of the sort: the famous emperor was called the Great due to a feat he achieved on his youth. He was a burly and athletic young man and, as it was a tradition at the time, he went hunting with several friends into a forest called the Vogos, and a huge bear appeared to them.

Carlos faced the huge animal and fought him with a broken arm, but fortunately, he managed to kill the beast. His hunting companions were amazed and called him the Great.

There are many people in History whose names are commonly appended with the phrase "the Great": Alexander the Great was also a brave warrior who achieved great feats at the time, Alfonso the Great in Spain, and also Darío the Great, from Persia.
