The secrets of the Countess of Revilla de CamargoIt was an unusual discovery. It consisted on five paintings dating back to the French romanticism of the 18th-century, which were discovered in the current Museum of Decorative Arts on the corner of 17th and N streets in Vedado.

Those paintings of bucolic and rural themes were used by María Luisa Gómez-Mena, Countess of Revilla de Camargo, to decorate the main halls of the ancient Palace, and who left the country at the beginning of the triumph of the revolution.

Before becoming a Museum, on July 24, 1964, valuable decorative works of art were found on a walled up wall, where five immense gilded velvets could be appreciated, but these cloths were somewhat damaged, and its restoration required a complete work.

At the time of being removed they got torn, a time in which restoration experts were surprised with the discovery. Four canvas reached a meter and sixty centimetres in width, while the fifth one reached two meters twenty centimetres. Although they remained undiscovered for more than 40 years they were in perfect condition.

As a curious fact we stand out, among the distinguished visitors of the Countess, the Duke of Windsor, member of the British Royal family, who would had reigned as Eduardo the Xlll since 1934, if he would had not relinquished the throne for his passionate affair with commoner Wallis Warfield.

Some of the paintings that were lost and found later appear in the photos the illustrious visitors took during their visit to the Countess, and which today you can admire among other jewels of the universal art at the Museum of Decorative Art with its forty doors and eleven halls.
