59 years of combat and victories

59 years of combat and victoriesFor many people of the world, what Cuba has achieved in its first 59 years of Revolution is a dream that is still unattainable, an aspiration that grows to the extent that its example overflows in everyday reality.

Contrary to what its enemies and some unbelievers think, the Caribbean archipelago has much to show in terms of the principles of freedom, dignity, equality and sovereignty, achievements for which so many men and women of this land, for several generations, have fought tirelessly and have come together to build a country where all utopias are possible.

Throughout these arduous and fertile 59 years of combat and victories, the Cuban people have had the certainty that with each new anniversary they multiply their moral obligation and commitment to the Revolution and Socialism.

In the middle of the festivities to bid farewell to this year that ended, Cubans and friends of the world recognize that an important 2018 begins, in which the 60th anniversary of Revolution will take place, and it will be commemorating the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Wars of Independence in the nineteenth century, always keeping in mind that, as the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro assured on the occasion of the Commemorative Evening for the Hundred Years of Struggle, held in Demajagua, "... in Cuba there has only been one revolution: the one Carlos Manuel de Céspedes began on October 10, 1868 and our people carry on in these instants.’’

2018 also opens the doors of essential national commemorations such as the birth of the National Hero of Cuba José Martí, the 115th anniversary of the student and communist leader Julio Antonio Mella, the 90th of the Commander Ernesto Che Guevara and the 92th of the beloved Commander in Chief Fidel Castro.

Also, there will be activities and events to remember the 60 years of important moments of those decisive battles prior to the revolutionary triumph, such as the creation of the III Eastern Front "Mario Muñoz" under the leadership of Juan Almeida Bosque and the II Eastern Front "Frank País" commanded by the then Commander Raúl Castro, the foundation of Radio Rebelde station in the Sierra Maestra, the invasion from East to West led by the prominent guerrilla leaders Camilo Cienfuegos and Ernesto Che Guevara, the Battle of Santa Clara, among many other transcendental events that occurred in 1958.

Once again the streets of all of Cuba will be illuminated with the flame of each January 28, this time to remember the 65th anniversary of the march of the torches carried out by the Centennial Generation, an extraordinary tribute will be given to the energetic attitude of Antonio Maceo, with the glorious Baraguá Protest after 140 years, the 65th anniversary of the assaults of the Moncada barracks in Santiago de Cuba, and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, in Bayamo will be commemorated and with greater steength the transcendence of the historic allegation of self-defense of Fidel "History Will Absolve Me", after six and a half decades.

There are multiple motivations for 2018 for the Cuban people. There is no need to explain in detail what is the reason for the renewed joy and enthusiasm of those in Cuba who enjoy a full life today, with their humanistic project full of unquestionable achievements, knowing that they have rights and duties of wide scope, with the enjoyment of freedom so many times dreamed and achieved, as part of a people that shows up before the world with their heads held high.

Carlos Manuel de Céspedes said it long ago: "Our motto is and always will be Independence or Death. Cuba not only has to be free, but can no longer be a slave again." This was also recently ratified by Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Councils of State and Ministers, at the close of the sessions of the National Assembly of People's Power: Here we are and will be, free, sovereign and independent!
