A television series project on Cuban slavery is awarded in Spain Una casa en Amargura, the new series by Ficción Producciones, of Galicia, won the award for Best Series television project, as reported in Conecta Fiction, the first international event dedicated to the co-production of television fiction series between Europe, Latin America and the Spanish-speaking United States, recently held in Santiago de Compostela.

The television series is inspired by the novel of the Galician writer Elisa Vázquez de Gey, which was presented during the XXVI International Book Fair of Havana, 2017 in the bookstore of Boloña, located just on Amargura Street, by the Journalist and Cuban narrator Marta Rojas.

In her research in the Cuban capital, the author had the collaboration of Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler, Historian of the City, whom she thanked "for his kindness and timely resolution of her hurried questions." The text is a drama about slavery in nineteenth-century Cuba, with mystery and other characters located in a nation of ethnic Hispanic, African and Chinese components. The reflection of an entire era that, as the writer says in her work, "Maybe we are in time to talk about it."

Vázquez de Gey said that she was happy and excited to know the prize and the news of the adaptation of her work to a historical series set in Havana by Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE) and RTV Comercial, for the Cuban side.

Mamen Quintas, who is the executive producer of Fiction Productions, expressed her joy at receiving this recognition, which, for her and the team, is an extraordinary impulse to continue in the project with the same energy and enthusiasm as before.

"Being selected in Conecta Fiction has been very important to us because there were more than 70 projects from around the world; thanks to this award and having the support of Radiotelevisión Española is the opportunity we have been waiting for years; and now, thanks also to Conecta Fiction and Una casa en Amargura it has become a reality. From the beginning we always thought that the novel was a fiction that could be adapted in RTVE, and the granting of the award comes to reinforce a little more the idea that we had that was a very nice project for them.¨

As to the approximate start date of this co-production of eight chapters full of light, color, beautiful stories and music, she said that it would be in late 2018 or early 2019, and while that time comes, the team will be immersed in the preparation of the series and the writing of the scripts. When asked by Radio Enciclopedia about the locations, she said that most of the filming would be in Havana, and the rest of the filming would be shared between Galicia and France.

"Making fiction in Cuba and having a good story to tell between Spain and Cuba was something we had been pursuing for some time and Elisa Vázquez de Gey's book, Una casa en Amargura, has been the perfect story for us since its first reading. In addition, the path traveled so far with the novel has been much sought after and desired, but above all it is very easy and flows positively. Everyone loved the story from the beginning, which has been enriched thanks to the script by Mauricio Romero and Olga Salvador," says the executive producer.

Fiction Producciones bets again on Cuba, because it premiered in 2014, together with the Animation Studies of the Cuban Institute of the Art and Cinematographic Industry (ICAIC), the cartoon ¨Meñique¨, the first Cuban animated film in 3D.

Recalling that this company has been making animation in Cuba for years, the executive producer said that making the leap to make a series of fiction in that country is very important, "and we are proud that the novel becomes the first international co-production for Cuba. A beautiful and wonderful way that once again strengthens the cultural and audiovisual relationship between Spain and Cuba, and we hope that this project is only the beginning of a fruitful relationship with the Cuban audiovisual," concluded Mamen Quintas.
