Counter Revolutionary Armed Groups Spread Terror in Cuba

School Teacher Manuel Ascunce and peasant Pedro Lantigua
Havana, Cuba.- One of the achievements of the Cuban Revolution of 1959, regarding social justice, was to provide universal access to education.

In 1961, the country launched a nation-wide literacy campaign. It was carried out by nearly 100,000 high school and university students who were sent as teachers to rural isolated communities across the country.

According to declassified CIA documents, the Agency had instructed armed groups in the mountains to spread fear to sabotage the campaign.

The way to do that was by killing some of those volunteer teachers and the men in the families that housed them; victims of that period were Conrado Benítez García, Eliodoro Rodríguez Linares, Delfín Sen Cedré, Manuel Ascunce Domenech and Pedro Lantigua Ortega. (MSc. Nora Rodríguez Calzadilla)
