Felipe Cabrera in front of the mirror twenty years laterCuban bassist, arranger and composer Felipe Cabrera, one of the most prominent musicians on the world jazz scene, with a successful career in Europe, returns to the stages of Cuba two decades after his last presentation.

Attracted by the 34th annual edition of the International Jazz Plaza Festival, Cabrera premiered his most recent record in the archipelago: "Mirror", in a concert full of reunions.

Certainly the star, who for almost fifteen years accompanied his countryman the pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba in his musical incursions, has settled his professional life among the greatest exponents of his generation, making Cuban jazz vibrate in a land as fertile as the French capital.

Breaking the 2019 Cabrera returns to Havana to face the mirror and relive from the chords his musical and life experiences through the debut of his new album, recorded in 2018.

This record places Cabrera among the most outstanding Cuban jazz musicians of recent times, a place he has occupied since becoming a world leader with the group Proyecto, by Gonzalo Rubalcaba, which later became the Cuarteto Cubano.

As the artist himself has highlighted on several occasions, the CD is precisely the remembrance of his childhood in Havana, and his journey from classical music to his dazzling jazz and interpretive freedom and to create that this genre offers.

Along this path, Cabrera has proven that, in addition to being a great bassist, his work as a composer is really attractive.

After “Made in Animas”, “Evidence from El Cayo” and “Night Poems”, “Mirror” became his most recent studio album and his fourth solo album, with none other than Irving Acao on the tenor saxophone, Leonardo Montana on the piano and Lukmil Pérez in the drums.

Cabrera’s first steps were in the orbit of classical music under the control of the bassoon, his instrument of formation, until he discovered the figure of Orlando "Cachaíto" López and his imprint in the development of the double bass. From that revelation, he learned to play the double bass and began to interweave his ways with Afro-Cuban folklore and jazz.

Along with Rubalcaba, Julio Barreto and Horacio "El Negro" Hernández, Cabrera shared the stage with other musicians such as Tata Güines, Changuito Quintana, Sergio Vitier, Miguel "Angá" Díaz, Santiago Feliú, Frank Emilio Flynn, Roberto Fonseca, Roberto Carcacés or Daphnis Prieto, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, George Benson or Jeff Gardner, among many other stars of the genre.

Among his collaborations, Cabrera has put the double bass at the service of other projects such as the first album by the Orishas, or along with relevant names such as those of Patato Valdés, Jimmy Sabater, José Mangual Jr., Eddy Palmieri, Chico Freeman, Chano Domínguez, the German pianist Sebastian Schunke or the African salsa group Africando.

On his return to Cuba with the album “Mirror”, Cabrera continues his constant search for new sounds, and relives the emotions of his childhood in the Havana district of Centro Habana, with the Cuban audience. A concert to look in the mirror, twenty years after his last presence on national stages.
