The Most Magical Performance Ever Heard

Published: 2012.07.29 - 22:29:43   /  /  Ana Elizabeth Rodríguez

That was the expression used by Iranian Orchestra conductor Shardad Rohani regarding the concert given by Greek musician and composer Yanni Chrysomallis (1954), at the 2,000-year-old Herodes Atticus Theater at the Acropolis of Athens on September 25, 1993.

This was Yanni’s breakthrough concert. The DVD-Album “Yanni Live at the Acropolis” has been his greatest commercial success. It is the second best-selling concert video of all time [after Michael Jackson's Thriller]; it sold more than 7 million copies worldwide.

His music has a very distinctive sound. He blends jazz, classical, soft rock, and world music to create predominantly instrumental works. He became interested in the piano at the age of six. Without any formal training he even developed his own music shorthand which he uses until this day.

Yanni's compositions have been used on commercial television programs, especially for sporting events such as the Tour de France, World Figure Skating Championships, U. S. Open Tennis Championships and Olympic Games. He has written film scores and the music for an award-winning British Airways television commercial.

“Nostalgia”, “One man´s dream” and “Until the last moment” are improved versions of his early work, reflecting his maturity as a composer. Yanni's "Acroyali/Standing in Motion" was determined to have the "Mozart Effect" by the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine (April 2001) because it is similar to Mozart's K 448 in tempo, structure, melodic and harmonic consonance and predictability.

He has performed in China, Mexico, Canada, and throughout the United States and Europe.

In 2003 he released his album “Ethnicity” in which he represented many of the world's cultures even through their own musical instruments. He said he used ethnicity to reflect the color and beauty of a multicultural society.

On that same year, he published his autobiography “Yanni in Words”, where he relates passages of his childhood in his native Greece, his college years in Minnesota, and some details about his internationally successful music career.

The listeners of radio Encyclopedia are well acquainted with his music and his name.
