Camerata Romeu will perform at the Heitor Villa-Lobos Festival in Brazil

The 54th annual Heitor Villa-Lobos Festival - recognized as the best and longest of Brazilian music - will include the performance of a Cuban group: The Camerata Romeu, led by maestro Zenaida Romeu.

The Festival will be held from November 4-15 in Río de Janeiro, Brazil. This is especially dedicated to Brazilian musician Egberto Gismonti, one of the most important contemporary composers in the world, covering various musical styles and transitions from popular Brazilian music, jazz and classical music.

This opening concert entitled "Sertões Veredas. Tribute à miscigenação", says the director of the Camerata Romeu, maestro Zenaida Romeu, ¨We will perform the works of the phonogram Saudações, which was recorded by the composer Egberto Gismonti with our group in 2009, under the German ECM Records, amongst other pleasant surprises."

¨Artists from all over the world will participate at the Heitor Villa-Lobos Festival, says the instrumentalist; it is a major event that has great significance for our country, because the National Center of Concert Music has not arranged a visa for Cuban musicians to travel to Brazil for almost ten years, so we will go to Brazil as pioneers of the past decade - and she emphasizes on her intentions -, ¨we will try to dignify and worthily represent the movement of music in Cuba."

As pointed out by this outstanding artist, this collaboration with Gismonti has a precedent in the discography that has been welcomed by the public and critics, and expects their performance at the festival will get the same acclaim.

She also highlights that her inroads into Brazilian scenarios have vital importance, "It is like a window to show what we do in Cuba in terms of thought, and although Cuba is a third world country, it has a strong tradition that comes from the glorious nineteenth century."

The Heitor Villa-Lobos Festival, since its inception in 1961, has the aim of promoting the work of that composer and other Brazilian musicians, through symphonies, chamber music and recitals of popular music, amongst other actions.
