Plácido Domingo will sing to Cuba... When you really love
The way I love you
Love me so much
-Gonzalo Roig

The renowned artist Plácido Domingo will sing to Cuba in a one-off concert, along with the National Symphony Orchestra and Puerto Rican soprano Ana María Martínez at the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso on Saturday.

From deep feelings of love and remembrance, he will perform an exquisite repertoire at the Sala García Lorca, under the baton of American director Eugene Kohn.

And it is that the maestro’s emotional dream of our land has always been very deep, since it comes from more than six decades ago, with the imprint on Cuban culture with the tradition of zarzuela, left by his mother the exceptional soprano Pepita Embil.

Plácido Domingo will sing to Cuba"The story dates back to many years ago, because my parents, Pepita Embil and Plácido Domingo, were loved by the Cuban public, especially my mother who sang in Cuba on many occasions", he told in a news conference, "This Thursday I was at the Martí Theater, and they gave me the programs of their performances, and I felt emotion.”

The performance of the great singer is an old illusion yearned for 28 years when he was invited to the International Festival of Lyric Art, which was chaired by the great Alicia Alonso. "My idea is that if the audience comes out satisfied and happy about the concert, I want to come back again", he said.

Sharing the scene and several pieces with the soprano Ana María Martínez is a reciprocal pleasure, as the remarkable performer with an intense international career "feels honor and emotion fills him."

Some are opera arias from Giuseppe Verdi's Ernani, the operetta The Merry Widow by Franz Lehár, the zarzuela Luisa Fernanda by Federico Moreno Torroba.

There will also be pieces by Ernesto Lecuona, which were included in the repertoire performed by Pepita Embil, "my mother met maestro Ernesto Lecuona and sang with him, I began listening to the songs and they are always present in my life", said Domingo.

Plácido Domingo will sing to CubaThe program also proposes classic Cuban pieces such as "Contigo en la distancia" by César Portillo de la Luz, not forgetting the Salida of the zarzuela Cecilia Valdés, which will be performed by the Puerto Rican soprano, who already could assess the Cuban public, because in the rehearsal, the singers of the National Lyric Theater were present in the choir that performed that immortal piece by Gonzalo Roig, which drew tears from the soloist’s eyes.

Plácido Domingo's trip to Havana with the whole family is full of emotions, such as the meeting with Cuban diva Omara Portuondo: "I already made a debut and it was with Omara, we sang ‘Quiéreme mucho’", explained the conductor.

Since 2009 Plácido Domingo, after a career of almost half a century as a tenor, began to defend the repertoire of baritone with a dozen operas. He recently made three productions of Giuseppe Verdi's Macbeth opera in Beijing, Los Angeles and Vienna.

A modest tribute was paid to maestro Domingo by the Radio Cubana, offering him a phonogram with the restored recording of Pepita Embil’s performance in Havana, as part of the patrimony of the CMBF Radio Musical Nacional station.

The record is an example of the work that is done for the sake of the rescue, digitization and conservation of sound heritage files, which are undertaken jointly with the Estudios Abdala since 2013.
