Second Conference Presencias Europeas en Cuba: a space to track the impact of migrations

Published: 2018.01.30 - 16:53:02   /  miguel.dario@renciclopedia.icrt.cu  /  Miguel Darío García Porto  /  translated by  Luis E. Amador Dominguez  /luis.amador@renciclopedia.icrt.cu

The Spanish poet Federico García Lorca was one of the many illustrious personalities who visited the largest archipelago of the Antilles and became part of its history.

When visiting Cuba on March 7, 1930, Lorca wrote these lines to his parents:

"But what is this? Spain again? Once again the world Andalusia? It is the yellow of Cádiz with one more grade, the pink of Seville shading towards carmine and the green of Granada, with a slight phosphorescence of fish ... Havana emerges among cane fields and rattles of maracas, divine comets and marimbos ... (... ) The arrival in Havana has been an event, since these people are exaggerated like few others.

"But Havana is wonderful, both old and modern. It is a mixture of Málaga and Cádiz, but much more animated and relaxed due to the tropics. The rhythm of the city is caressing, soft, sensual, and full of a charm that is absolutely Spanish, but of the most characteristic and deepest of our civilization.

"I naturally feel at home. You already know what I like Málaga, and this is much richer and more varied. For now I do not know how to tell you more.

"At every moment I have the impression of finding friends behind the corner and every moment I have to think that I am in the Caribbean Sea, in the beautiful Antilles, not to be in Vélez or Motril. The sea is prodigious of colors and light. It looks like the Mediterranean, although it is more violent in nuances..."

In order to track the impact and transcendence in the culture of migration, the Center for the Interpretation of Cultural Relations Cuba-Europe invites all the researchers of the country to participate in the Second Conference ‘Presencias Europeas’ in Cuba.

The main subject of the event is "European Personalities in Cuba", which will be held between February 14 and 16, 2018, and it delves into the mark and impact of the settlement or visit of European citizens to Havana or the rest of the country, where there is not so much information on the topic.

Abstracts of the papers will be presented in Calibri 12, a space and a half, with a content of no more than three hundred words, accompanied by a curricular synthesis and personal contact data of the author.

They must be delivered before January 22, 2018 at the address of O'Reilly No. 4 e / Tacón y Ave. del Puerto, La Habana Vieja, or sent by email to segundacabo@patrimonio.ohc.cu. Acceptance decisions will be published on January 30, 2018 on the website http://segundocabo.ohc.cu.

Located in the former Palacio del Segundo Cabo, in front of the Plaza de Armas, the Center for the Interpretation of Cultural Relations Cuba-Europe directs its management to recreational instruction, in which the history between the Caribbean nation and Europe is tangibly illustrated.

The institution groups more than 10 rooms, including one dedicated to migration, another to travelers, music and dance, cartography, the setting of the time and books. It also has a space for temporary exhibitions, a multi-purpose room for conferences, screenings and cultural presentations.

The Second Conference Presencias Europeas en Cuba takes place within the framework of the International Cooperation Project of Participatory and Sustainable Integral Management for Local Development of the Historical Center and the Bay of Havana, and it is sponsored by the European Union and the Barcelona City Council.
