The Trio Alter Ego prepares a new record productionThe trio of strings Alter Ego - a single small format compilation of its kind in Cuba - recently recorded its fourth album under the EGREM record company, and according to the director of the group, Diego Santiago, it will be entitled 'Vuelta atrás'.

"The first record was 'Sones y Flores' recorded with the EGREM record company, the second was a live concert at the Pablo de la Torriente Brau Center, the third were versions with the Colibrí record company and now this one is again with EGREM", which is a compilation of the group's recordings, says his leader.

"The CD is now in the photo-making, design and mixing process," said the lute player of the ensemble. "I hope that by the beginning of next year it will be finished and it may be competing in the next edition of Cubadisco."

He emphasizes that the main purpose of this record will be to show the versatility of an instrument like the lute and adds, "It is really a different project because we all know that this instrument in our country is only used in country music, and then we want to show more things with the lute not only with Alter Ego, but also with this instrument as a soloist: the Titian lute, the violin lute, the lute and string quintet, formats that give another optic and a sound richness, qualities that truly have caught the attention of EGREM when being classified as original."

The Trio Alter Ego was created in 2005 under the direction of the lute player Diego Santiago - graduated in the same year from the Higher Institute of Art of Havana in that specialty - under the guidance of teachers Efraín Amador, José Antonio Miranda and Eduardo Martin.

They cultivate Cuban folkloric concert music, with Cuban native instruments showing the possibilities of both timbral and technical instruments: guitar, tres and lute.

During its professional career, the group has performed concerts in the most important halls and theaters in countries such as Argentina, Chile, Switzerland, France, Spain and Cuba.

Alter Ego claims Cuban folk and baroque music, but the perform with these three string instruments, rich in timbres and musical possibilities, "We defend what is called 'popular concert music', meaning that we use our instruments, guitar, tres and lute, which are used in country and traditional music, but in a concert version. It is a totally atypical offering in Cuban music," explained Diego Santiago.

In its repertoire, the trio has integrated the folk songbook and the new Cuban folk music, "There is a great rapprochement with folk music. We have been lucky to work with folk singers from Santa Clara and other regions of Cuba, such as Alain Garrido or Leonardo García "The folk music runs through our veins and it was natural that we have integrated the songs by Pablo Milanés or Silvio Rodríguez into our music." We worked in collaboration with the Pablo de la Torriente Brau Center or El Mejunje, which are two institutions dedicated to folk music," concluded the instrumentalist.
