Who named hurricanes?

Published: 2017.02.21 - 11:31:01   /  web@renciclopedia.icrt.cu  /  Juan Blas Rodríguez  /  translated by  Luis E. Amador Dominguez  /luis.amador@renciclopedia.icrt.cu

Who named hurricanesCubans and, in general, all Caribbean people are threatened by hurricanes at any given time of year. This danger comes very frequently with its aftermath of death and destruction.

Formerly, these natural phenomena were recognized by the year they happened, so it was talked about the cyclone of 1926 or that of 1930, now, as with people, these meteorological phenomena have its own names, but ... who came up with that idea. I will tell you.
Clement Wragge, a nineteenth-century Australian meteorologist, was the first to name hurricanes. At first, he chose biblical names such as Zacchaeus, Uzza, or Tamar.

However, a World War II radio operator is also credited with the naming, when the US Air Force was warned that a tornado was about to arrive. The radio operator played a popular song that said, "Every little breeze seems to whisper: Louise." Thus, that cyclone received that name.

Back in 1979, the United States Meteorological Commission only gave female names to hurricanes, but the Australian meteorological service began to assign names of both sexes.

Today, a commission meets and prepares the names that are available for each cyclone, hurricane or typhoon starting with A and ending with Z.
