Solidarity with Cuba Grows against US Hostility

Several voices have been raised throughout the world to condemn the tightening of the hostility by the Government of the United States against Cuba in order to stop the country''s development and to suffocate it economically.

After Washington announced the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, several nations condemned the decision, aimed at hindering foreign investments in Cuba.

Messages from Russia, China, Belgium and Mexico, among other nations, were sent to Havana to condemn that measure.

We repeat that we are against unilateral sanctions and that restrictions can only be legitimate if they are approved by the United Nations, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

China, in turn, expressed opposition to the US measures that reinforce the economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba, as they are an obstacle to the country's socioeconomic development and wellbeing.

Several solidarity organizations in Belgium rejected the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, which they described as a new violation of international law.

Meanwhile, a communiqué from the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs of Mexico noted that the government of that country 'opposes the decision by the United States to enforce Title III of the Helms-Burton Act for the first time in history to allow US citizens to file lawsuits against companies that use properties confiscated after the Cuban Revolution in 1959'.

These reactions were followed by those from the European Union (EU) and Canada, which noted that they will resort to legal measures if they are affected by the implementation of that title, aimed at depriving Cuba of the foreign investments necessary for its socioeconomic development, also affecting its current and potential partners.

The EU and Canada reacted in those terms in a joint communiqué issued by the high representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini; Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom, and Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland.

The latter pointed out that Ottawa is deeply disappointed and will review all options to defend the interests of its citizens who are doing business in Cuba.

In the United States, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives, Eliot Engel, said that the decision to activate Title III of the Helms-Burton Act will isolate Washington from its allies.

On his Twitter account, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has rejected Washington's interfering stances and has made it clear that the measures to stop the country's development will not intimidate its people.

Diaz-Canel underlined that 'Cuban women and men will always defend our sovereignty and independence against the empire, it is a legacy of our history that we assume'.

According to the head of State, the Helms-Burton Act aims to destroy the Revolution that triumphed on January 1, 1959, and also attacks Cuba's independence and dignity.

'It represents the annexationist and colonial wish, aims to cause a change in the political and economic system in Cuba. It is an offense to our sovereignty and dignity,' Diaz-Canel added.

Previously, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez described the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act as an attack on international law.

Shortly after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Washington's decision on Twitter to allow lawsuits in US courts over US properties 'confiscated' (as they call the nationalizations), Rodriguez expressed rejection of the law on the same social network.

According to the head of Cuban diplomacy, it is an attack on the sovereignty of Cuba and other States, considering the extraterritorial scope of that legislation.
