
The Matanzas magazine, from the publishing house of the same name, paid tribute from its pages and illustrations to the Pharmaceutical Museum, considered today a prestigious cultural and heritage institution of this western Cuban city.
This issue of the publication is visually recreated by Johann Trujillo, who used original labels preserved in the institution, and includes an article by Marcia Brito, director of the Museum, which deals with the history of pharmacy.
Also appearing in the Flor y Memoria section are poems by Teresita Burgos and Alejo Galbán, and a chronicle by journalist and writer Maylan Álvarez, as well as texts by playwrights Rubén Darío Salazar, winner of the 2020 National Theater Prize, and Gilberto Subiaurt.
There are also works by the poets Osmán Avilés, Víctor Rodríguez Luis Lorente, Patricia Mesa, Rolando Estévez and Alfredo Zaldívar, the folk singer Rey Pantoja and the doctor in Pedagogical Sciences in the specialty of Music, María Victoria Oliver.
Established on January 1st, 1882 with the name of Botica Francesa, in a street next to the old Plaza de Armas, current La Libertad Park, its first owners were the doctors in Pharmacy Juan Fermín Figueroa and Ernesto Triolet.
During its long years as a pharmacy, more than 150 formulas were prepared in its laboratory, including syrups, tinctures, ointments, essences, elixirs, ointments. and pills.
An exponent of the neoclassical architecture of this late 19th century city, it operated as a drug store until 1963 and the following year it moved on to its current function, the only room with these characteristics on the continent.
Classified as a valuable jewel of the Matanzas residents, it has the National Heritage Award in 2007 and National Conservation Award in 2008.
