Olga Montes Barrios and Her Celular Encantado

With the 2020 Foundation of the City of Santa Clara Award and the premiere, on August 1st, of the TV film Luna mía - her script directed by Mariela López - Olga Montes Barrios is one of the most prolific creators in the field of children's and young adults' literature in contemporary Cuba.

El celular encantado, the story of a little girl misunderstood in her home and victim of bullying, was the winning story of the aforementioned contest sponsored by Capiro Publishing House, the Provincial Center for Books and Literature, the writers' branch of the Association of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Uneac), the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS), and the Juan Marinello Cultural Center in Santa Clara.

According to the writer herself, one of the main motivations was "to see how the new technologies have come to occupy a prominent place in the daily life of the majority of people. Some suffer their harmful effects, such as depression or alienation, when living a different reality. Children are exposed to psychological abuse, they become emotionally dependent... If it is not controlled, it can be pitiful."

Born in Artemisa in 1973 and graduated from the Onelio Jorge Cardoso Literary Training Center, Olga Montes has published the books, ¿Por qué no nos visitan los extraterrestres?; Permiso para decir; Chimbe, and La bruja Maluja, among others. She was awarded in the Interamerican Short Story Contest Fundación Avon para la Mujer, Argentina; the Regino E. Boti Award for Children's Literature, for Gorila de Angumu; Aquelarre Award for humor, with the short story El resguardo; La 2018 Edad de Oro Award, in the short story genre, for her book Un mensaje sin leer, and many more.

Another award in the solid career of the Artemisa-resident writer Olga Montes speaks of all the effort she puts into literature. Her confinement in the midst of the current pandemic led her to write uninterruptedly, taking advantage of an imposed stop at home.
