HAVANA, Cuba.- Chucho Valdes delivered a topnotch concert last night to jazz fans by premiering several songs from "Sin fronteras", his latest album, at the opening of the International Jazz Plaza Festival 28.
Speaking to reporters, the renowned musician said the album (still in the studio) is named like that, No Borders, because includes rhythms and authors from around the world.
The new production is now being recorded at the Abdala Studios, and has compositions dedicated to American Indians, the Spanish and Arabic music, Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz, Valdes commented.
He said that the CD will also include songs dedicated to his family, one called Pilar, to the memory of his mother, but also to Bebo, his dad, and Caridad Amaro, his grandmother.
"It will be a better disc than Chucho's Steps", his previous CD, winner of the Best Latin Jazz Album at the Grammy Awards, the famed pianist assured.
"It has a different music format and is different in terms of structures," he added.
Although, he said, the sound of “Chucho's” is wonderful,” this is also very good and I think it will be successful.”
The crowd that gathered at Havana's Mella Theater enjoyed the premiere of several of the titles that are included in "Without Borders", including Yo oigo voices, Abdel, The corinho and Scheherazade, a variation of the eponymous piece by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
In addition to the members of his quintet, Valdes had the collaboration of guests like Canadian clarinetist Jane Bunnett and the Cuban percussionist Roberto Vizcaino Young Jr., whose impressive performance demonstrated the quality of the new generations of musicians on the Island
For today the Jazz Plaza offers performances by Joaquin Betancourt and the Youth Jazz Band and Arturo O'Farrill, in the Mella Theater, and the Culture House of Plaza municipality will host the presentation of Cuban Women in jazz, with Xiomara Laugart and Anacaona, among other artists.
