A project simmering for three decades and with a high-quality musical seal is the new album entitled Silvio Rodríguez with Diákara, which will be available on digital platforms from the first of October.
As a preview of this unreleased work, the song "Variaciones sobre un viejo tema", the second preview of this album, has been available since 10 September.
According to Silvio Rodríguez in a press release issued by the Ojalá Studios, "this album was recorded in 1991, in the studios of the PolyGram label on Miguel Ángel de Quevedo Avenue -in Coyoacán-, Mexico City. It was recorded by the young engineer Francisco Miranda, with the assistance of Miguel Ángel Bárzagas, who did the live sound.
The artist, the leading representative of the Nueva Trova movement, recalled that they arrived there somewhat tired, wanting to get home, as they had just finished a tour of Aztec cities.
In three or four morning sessions they managed to record 10 songs, and in one morning they recorded eight of the voices that can be heard. Twenty years later, in the Ojalá studios in Havana, the musician would include the other two.
These records have gone through many tribulations and have generated many adventures," Rodríguez said, adding: "They were originally recorded with very specific sound reducers, equipment that was connected to the recorders that were used at the time, and in Cuba, there was no such technology.
To materialize such a longed-for project, after several vicissitudes and a considerable time-lapse, at the end of 1989, Silvio Rodríguez managed to acquire a 24-channel multitrack and the necessary sound reducer to install it in Cuba.
This equipment was lent to EGREM for years, and there, in San Miguel Street, in Centro Habana, the recording begun on Miguel Ángel Avenue in Coyoacán was completed.
On the motivations that have led the author of songs such as "Ojalá", "Playa Girón" and "La maza" to return time and again to this work, he emphasized: "it has been its musical quality and that Diákara was an exceptional group that in a few months achieved a remarkable solidity and originality".
At the time of the recording, Diákara was made up of Cuban music legends such as keyboardist Emilio Vega and drummer Oscarito Valdés Jr. and had Chucho Valdés as one of its collaborators.
Such reasons make the CD Silvio Rodríguez con Diákara a wonderful gift for lovers of good music of all times and one that we should all acquire to enjoy in the intimacy of our own home.
