As part of its solemn General Assembly, the Economic Society of Friends of the Country, a Cuban civil society institution, presented several awards to prominent national figures.<\/p>\n

The assembly, held to commemorate the 232nd anniversary of the non-governmental organization, was presided over by Dr. Zoila Ben\u00edtez de Mendoza, the Society\u2019s director; Dr. Armando Rodr\u00edguez Batista, Minister of Science, Technology, and Environment; Dr. Luis Vel\u00e1zquez P\u00e9rez, President of the Cuban Academy of Sciences; Luis Enrique Ramos, Secretary of SEAP; and journalist Fernando Rodr\u00edguez Sosa, President of the Society’s Culture Section, who also hosted the event.<\/p>\n

For the first time in its history, the Familia Patria<\/strong> Award was presented to the Rodr\u00edguez Gonz\u00e1lez family, comprised of the renowned singer-songwriter Silvio Rodr\u00edguez Dom\u00ednguez, his wife, flutist and clarinetist Niurka Gonz\u00e1lez N\u00fa\u00f1ez, and their daughter, Malva Rodr\u00edguez Gonz\u00e1lez, also a musician.<\/p>\n

The award was inspired by an old idea of Cuban philosopher Jos\u00e9 de la Luz y Caballero, one of the distinguished members of the Society in its early years.<\/p>\n

In his acceptance speech, Silvio Rodr\u00edguez expressed gratitude to SEAP leadership, saying, \u201cThere are many Cuban families who deserve this award\u2014in science, other fields, and professions. In music, I quickly think of the Romeu, L\u00f3pez-Gavil\u00e1n Junco Garc\u00eda, Lay, Vitier Garc\u00eda-Marruz Rodr\u00edguez, Alfonso Vald\u00e9s, and Formell families.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of Malva, Niurka, and myself, I thank you for this award, which honors and inspires us to be an even better family for our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the same assembly, the Samuel Feij\u00f3o<\/strong> Lifetime Achievement Award was granted to poet and essayist Nancy Morej\u00f3n. This distinction honors literary figures whose work reflects themes of nature and the environment.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the Francisco de Arango y Parre\u00f1o<\/strong> Award was presented to Dr. Jorge N\u00fa\u00f1ez Jover, President of SEAP\u2019s Economics and Sciences Section. Dr. Jorge Renato Ibarra Guitar, a historian with a Ph.D. in Historical Sciences, was also honored with the F\u00e9lix Varela<\/strong> Award, bestowed by SEAP\u2019s Social Sciences Section.<\/p>\n
