The 110th anniversary of the birth of novelist Jos\u00e9 Soler Puig, winner of Cuba\u2019s 1986 National Literature Prize, will be commemorated in the El elogio oportuno series next Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Fayad Jam\u00eds bookstore, located at Obispo 261 entre Cuba y Aguiar, in Havana\u2019s Historic Center.<\/p>\n
At this event, led by journalist and critic Fernando Rodr\u00edguez Sosa, essayist, narrator, and professor Pedro P\u00e9rez Rivero, along with researcher and professor Yoan Enrique Cartaya Hern\u00e1ndez, deputy director of Editorial Letras Cubanas, will take part and assess the work of the author of Bertill\u00f3n 166<\/em>, a novel awarded the Casa de las Am\u00e9ricas Literary Prize in the first edition of the competition in 1960.<\/p>\n Attendees of El elogio oportuno will be able to listen to excerpts from an interview with Soler Puig conducted by journalist Orlando Castellanos, according to the press release received by Radio Enciclopedia.<\/p>\n Self-taught by training, Jos\u00e9 Soler Puig \u2014 who was born in Santiago de Cuba in 1916 and died in that same city in 1996 \u2014 is one of the most significant voices in contemporary Cuban literature.<\/p>\n His bibliography includes, among other titles, the novels En el a\u00f1o de enero<\/em>, El derrumbe<\/em>, El caser\u00f3n<\/em>, El pan dormido<\/em>, Un mundo de cosas<\/em>, El nudo<\/em>, and Una mujer<\/em>.<\/p>\n El elogio oportuno \u2014 which aims to pay tribute to writers, books, historical events, and institutions reaching milestone anniversaries \u2014 takes its name from a Marti aphorism: \u201cTimely praise fosters merit; and the lack of timely praise discourages it,\u201d which appeared in the pages of the newspaper Patria<\/em> in April 1892.<\/p>\n Translated by Luis E.
