Seven decades later, the Charter remains as relevant as ever.

Fidel had always maintained a sincere relationship of respect and affection with José Antonio. During the 53 days Fidel remained in Cuba after his release from prison following the Moncada events, he held frequent and important meetings with the university student leader. In fact, Echeverría, accompanied by the FEU executive committee, had received him when the train from Batabanó arrived at its final stop at Havana Terminal on May 16, 1955.

That shared commitment to ideals and joint efforts to organize the struggle to liberate Cuba had grown increasingly stronger and more hopeful. Thus, following a day of discussions and exchanges, the important document was typed at around ten o’clock on the morning of August 29, on Mexican soil. After it was read, with René Anillo also taking part, some elements were added and others corrected, resulting in a new version. The two young leaders signed it on the spot.

The Charter, consisting of 19 paragraphs, stated that “the FEU and the Revolutionary Movement 26th of July, the two organizations that bring together the new generation (…) have decided to firmly unite their efforts to overthrow the tyranny and carry out the Cuban Revolution.”

It made clear that, once every other possibility had been exhausted, revolution was the only solution, and that conditions were ripe for the people to achieve their liberation through armed insurrection, backed by a nationwide general strike.

This was no ordinary document. Every word carried the weight of a profound historical legacy. It thus defined, established the boundaries of, and charted the course for the unity of action and ideals, reaffirming that “the revolution would come to power free of commitments and interests.”

It established the coordination needed for the struggle and the unity of Cuban youth around the political program, the defense of the people’s rights, and the recognition of Cuban youth by both organizations, with the aim of achieving the definitive liberation of the Cuban people and subsequently advancing the popular transformations demanded by the nation.

Seventy years have passed since that enduring and unbreakable commitment made by Cuba’s student youth, later reaffirmed through the Revolution and Fidel. The extraordinary relevance of the Mexico Charter lies in its content and historical significance, reaffirmed by today’s Fidelist and Martí-inspired youth in opposition to supporters of annexation and internal enemies, and in the face of imperialist interference by the right and the Miami mafia, amid the circumstances Cuba is experiencing today. It is a reaffirmation of indispensable revolutionary principles and of the certainty that this generation of young people, faithful successors to that earlier generation, will not allow the banners of the socialist homeland to fall.

Translated by Luis E.
