It curbs potential foreign investment with the same ferocity with which it weighs upon the already difficult lives of children battling cancer.

It seeks to silence cultural, sporting and academic exchanges between Cubans and Americans with the same vindictiveness with which it consigns our blind people to perpetual darkness. It does everything in its power to boycott and isolate Cuba, with the same malicious determination with which it leaves the shelves of the island’s hospitals, pharmacies and grocery stores bare. Ultimately, the U.S Empire wants death and hardship for Cubans unless there is unconditional surrender.

There is no Cuban family and no sector of the country that has not fallen victim to the effects of the blockade. Its repercussions are so far-reaching, touching every sphere of our lives, that merely hearing the word “blockade” immediately strikes a chord, because its impact extends even into the most intimate realm of personal aspirations and goals.

Photo: Cubadebate

That decades-long and incomprehensible siege is the main obstacle to the development of the Cuban economy and to the full enjoyment of the human rights of those born in this beautiful archipelago. Its impact can be seen in the family sphere in the starkest and most painful terms, but it is also felt in institutions and places of study and work, as when a scientist is denied a visa to travel and meet with colleagues from other countries to exchange knowledge on specific subjects.

And what can be said of young athletes who, after an intense year of preparation, cannot understand why they are denied a visa and barred from attending an international event? Or of the efforts and resources that must be devoted to producing and refining the oil the country so desperately needs?

Millions of such experiences could be recounted by our hardworking, self-sacrificing, honest and altruistic people, who have been made the target of the world’s most powerful empire’s relentless campaign of pressure.

It has been demonstrated that the United States blockade is directed against the Cuban people. Its aim is to break the political and patriotic will of the entire nation, reverse the revolutionary process and undermine the foundations we have built. But Cuba is strong. Its people are heirs to deep Mambí roots. Commander in Chief Fidel Castro taught them never to bend, but to resist and prevail.

Translated by Luis E.
