Cuba and International Dance Day

In Cuba, the National Council for the Performing Arts has scheduled a wide and varied program throughout the country this month, as well as the presentation of this institution’s National Dance Prize.

Among the highlights is the 27th edition of the International Festival of Dance in Urban Landscapes Habana Vieja Ciudad en Movimiento, which begins on April 21; on that day, the company Contemporary Dance of Cuba will begin its performances at the Avellaneda Hall, including the world premiere of Hands On, choreographed by the Greek Yannis Mantsis.  These performances will last two weekends and will include the recently premiered work Polvo, palabras, sombras, nada by George Céspedes.

In addition, Los días de la Danza will be held in the Cuban capital from April 25; in Matanzas, the Jornada de Teatro Callejero (Street Theater Day) will be held; Villa Clara will dedicate the peña El patio de la suerte to the 28th anniversary of the Oché Folkloric Ensemble; and in Agramonte, the Ballet of Camagüey will perform Swan Lake on International Dance Day.

The first edition of the Jornada Danzar en casa will be held in Ciego de Ávila from April 27 to May 1, with the aim of presenting research and performance practices and dialoguing with professionals and specialists from other parts of the world, according to the newspaper Invasor.
