Centro de Estudios Martianos: A permanent focus on Cuba’s national hero

The Centro de Estudios Martianos celebrates its 47th anniversary this Friday, 19 July. This iconic institution, affiliated to the Office of the José Martí Programme, has had a profound impact in the field of research, especially in studies dedicated to the life and work of José Martí.
The historic mansion, once the home of José Francisco Martí Zayas Bazán, son of José Martí and inspiration for Ismaelillo, has been and continues to be a centre for scholars convinced that the thought of Cuba’s national hero is as relevant today as it was in his time.
As is customary on such occasions, the celebration has turned into a day of activities organised by the management of the Centro de Estudios Martianos, with the participation of its staff and frequent visitors.
A notable highlight of this anniversary is the presentation of the book La Edad de Oro, freshly printed in Uruguay. This publication is a co-publication between the Centro de Estudios Martianos, the Uruguayan publishing house Primero de Mayo of the PITCNT and the Cuban Embassy in Uruguay.
In Paraguay, preparations are underway with Librerías La Paz for another edition of this co-publication to be distributed to schools and public libraries. Meanwhile, Editorial Cultura in Guatemala, currently celebrating its International Book Fair, has facilitated the public presentation of the magazine Martí dedicated to the children of the Americas.
These events underline the strengthening of relations between the Centro de Estudios Martianos and academics and intellectuals from countries such as Guatemala, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Paraguay and others.
On 19 July, a ceremony will be held to honour the institution’s most outstanding employees. The main event will feature performances by young musicians from the Manuel Saumell School of the National Council for Artistic Education, and will end with a concert by the singer Rey Montalvo.
