Collective Exhibition Alejo Carpentier: A Pioneer of Modernity at Fine Arts

This Friday, January 31, at 4:00 p.m., the collective exhibition Alejo Carpentier: A Pioneer of Modernity will open in the temporary gallery on the third floor of the Cuban Art Building at the National Museum of Fine Arts.

It will showcase pieces from the institutional collection, reflecting “the vision of a critic who anticipated the perception of the work of artists from this significant period in Cuban art history,” said Roberto Cobas Amate, curator of the exhibition.

Reflections by the influential narrator and journalist, 1977 Cervantes Prize winner, dating from the 1920s to the 1960s, will accompany around forty works created during that period by Antonio Gattorno, Eduardo Abela, Carlos Enríquez, Wifredo Lam, Amelia Peláez, René Portocarrero, Rafael Moreno, and Raúl Milián.

This exploration of the remarkable legacy of Alejo Carpentier (Lausanne, December 26, 1904 – Paris, April 24, 1980) as an art critic commemorates the forty-fifth anniversary of his passing while highlighting his contributions to the recognition of those who played a key role in the emergence and flourishing of modern art in Cuba.
