Cuba’s National Museum of Fine Arts to Celebrate the Centennial of Professor Oscar Morriña

The National Museum of Fine Arts in Cuba will celebrate the life and legacy of Professor Oscar Morriña on the 100th anniversary of his birth, recognizing his significant contributions as an art historian and educator.

A special panel discussion will take place on Wednesday, July 30, at 10:00 a.m. in the Audiovisual Hall of the Cuban Art Building. The panelists will include María del Carmen Rumbault, a respected figure in Cuban visual arts education; Bárbara Beatriz Laffita, a professor at the Faculty of Arts and Letters at the University of Havana; Roberto Cobas, curator of the Museum’s «Emergence and Consolidation of Modern Art in Cuba» collections; and Oramis López Cedeño, head of the Museum’s Education Department.

Oscar Morriña is remembered for his extensive contributions to art education and museum outreach. He played a key role in designing educational programs and materials aimed at fostering aesthetic awareness among the Museum’s general audience. Additionally, he founded and promoted the Didactic Gallery within the institution.

Morriña taught for many years in the Art History Department at the University of Havana and authored over a dozen didactic books on museology, art history, and visual arts appreciation, many of which remain essential reading at various educational levels.
