Heritage, Mother’s Day, Music and Romerias in May

The First International Marta Arjona Heritage Congress – dedicated to the commemoration of her centenary -, tributes to Mother’s Day, Romerias in Holguín, exhibitions and music are among the main activities of May in Cuban culture.

This important cultural event will take place this week at the National Museum of Fine Arts, with the participation of the Ministers of Culture of the Group of 77 + China, and a wide participation of Cuban and foreign delegates and guests from many countries.

In this context, exhibitions will be inaugurated at the Jose Martí National Library; the event will also be dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the scientist and speleologist Antonio Núñez Jiménez, to the figure of Servando Cabrera Moreno, one of the most admired artists of the plastic arts in Cuba, and to the 110th anniversary of the building where the meeting will be held.  The 19th International Ernest Hemingway Colloquium will be held at the same time.

From May 1 to 5, Havana will welcome foreign visitors attending the International Tourism Fair – FIT Cuba 2023 – whose theme is culture and heritage.

In the performing arts, the world premiere of Habana Fénix by Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba, a tribute to the city and historian Eusebio Leal, is making the headlines.  The Martí Theater will host 11 performances of the show, which the company’s director describes as emotional and sensual, in a message of hope and future.

As is traditional, the Month of Flowers and Mothers reserves a place for them in the National Crafts Fair Art for Mom, sponsored by the Cuban Fund of Cultural Assets, in an effort to make every year, all the tribute they deserve.  Although the second Sunday of the month is dedicated to them, love, affection, respect and admiration are feelings and values that should be expressed every day.

The Romerias of May will celebrate their thirtieth anniversary in the province of Holguín, on this occasion they will be dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of José Martí, to the Fourth Congress of the Organization, and to the people and culture of Mexico. Tributes will be paid to the founders, and young artists from all over Cuba will participate, as well as the Masters of Youth who, through their work, contribute to the development of new creation in Cuba.

Music highlights include the Cubadisco International Fair; the concert by Maestro Ruy López-Nussa y La Academia on May 20 at the Theater of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, where he will premiere several compositions.

On May 25, at the San Felipe Neri Oratory, Lianne Vega will give the second concert in a series of recitals dedicated to the dissemination of the most recent Cuban piano repertoire, with pieces by composers who have graduated from the University of the Arts since 2000.

At the end of May, on Sunday 28th, the Havana Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Daiana García, will present the concert Clásicos de Hollywood at the Martí Theater.
