Last performances of the play Frijoles colorados

To round off this successful season, Verónica Lynn and Jorge Luis de Cabo will be performing Frijoles colorados (Red Beans) again on 22, 23, and 24 September.

The El Sótano Theatre (Calle K e/ 25 y 27, Vedado, Havana) announced on its Facebook page that performances will begin this Friday and Saturday at 7:00 pm and on Sunday at 5:00 pm. You may check the schedule by calling 78320630, and the box office will open one and a half hours before each show.

The two actors previously mentioned are portraying Matilde and Federico, an elderly couple, in the production which is based on a script by Cristina Rebull.

Two elderly centenarians live in an old house and face numerous challenges, enduring various hardships including cyclones… We all know who the «Colorados» are. As a small, economically disadvantaged country, we have learned to use brooms, spoons, pots, and pans to defend our beliefs. «I am trying to depict this reality through the play so that everyone can relate to their own,» said Verónica Lynn, who is also the play’s general director, in an interview with La Jiribilla.

«In art you shouldn’t improvise, you shouldn’t take crazy risks, out of respect for the audience and for myself. But the directors I wanted to direct me couldn’t do it, and since I had already directed La gran tirana and El último bolero, with Katia Caso and Cheryl Zaldívar, I made up my mind,» she adds.

Frijoles colorados is the result of a co-production between Teatro Trotamundos and Mefisto Teatro, to which both actors belong.

The play premiered in Havana in May 2023, on the occasion of Verónica Lynn’s 92nd birthday, and was performed for the first time that month before being staged at the Margarita Casallas Theatre in Villa Clara on 8 and 9 July.

Last August, audiences in the Cuban capital were delighted to hear that this amusing tale, which uses the means of the Theatre of the Absurd, would be staged again at weekends.

The performances of these days in September mark the end of the run of Frijoles colorados, an original play by Cristina Rebull that was one of the finalists in the first edition of the Virgilio Piñera Playwriting Prize (Ediciones Tablas-Alarcos) in 2002.
