Maikel Dinza Celebrates a Decade of Cuban Son with New Album Destino

Renowned Cuban sonero Maikel Dinza released his sixth studio album, Destino, at the end of May across all digital platforms, offering a vibrant musical tribute to the 10th anniversary of his band, Soneros de la Juventud.
The talented musician, composer, and producer presents an album that not only reflects his artistic evolution but also celebrates a decade of work with Soneros de la Juventud, a group that has become a benchmark in contemporary Cuban music.
From the beginning, Dinza has skillfully navigated the diverse forms of Cuban son—from its traditional roots to bold fusions with timba, pop, and other modern genres. Previous releases such as Al compás del bailador, Regalando corazones, Pa’ que bailen to, Manigua, Retro Salsa, and his contribution to Vívelo with Compay Segundo have paved the way for this new project, showcasing a more mature, thoughtful, and accomplished artist.
Destino is a double album composed entirely by Dinza, featuring two volumes with eight tracks each. The sonic proposal leans toward a more intimate and romantic aesthetic, while still preserving the infectious rhythm and unmistakable Cuban flavor that define his music. The album blends innovative harmonies and contemporary melodic patterns with strong elements of Latin pop, all deeply rooted in Cuba’s rich musical heritage.
The title track captures the essence of the entire album: an emotional journey full of feeling, poetic nuance, and musical sophistication. Throughout the album, Dinza employs various instrumental arrangements while maintaining a consistent romantic tone that ties the project together.
The recording features an impressive roster of Cuban and international musicians. From Colombia, acclaimed percussionist Caliche Sabogal contributes his rhythmic flair to over half of the tracks. Longtime collaborator Pombo Arcia, a Cuban percussionist, returns with his signature virtuosity and flair.
Three talented bassists leave their mark on the project: Yubel Téllez (Mexico), Nelson Jerez (Cuba), and Maikel Dinza himself, who recorded most of the basslines. Veteran trombonist Oscar O’Reilly delivers masterful performances, while the trumpet section shines with the contributions of two outstanding talents: the young and vibrant Kevin Peñalver and the seasoned Yoandy Vera from Villa Clara, whose expressive style adds emotional depth to the album.
Backing vocals—an essential hallmark of Cuban son—are brought to life with energy and precision by José Antonio Rodríguez, Rubén Rodríguez, Yailen Torres, and Camilo M. Dinza “El Kamy,” enriching each track with layered textures and depth.
Destino invites listeners to both dream and dance, offering a rediscovery of the intimate side of Cuban son without losing its rhythmic soul. It is also a clear testament to Maikel Dinza’s artistic growth, confirming his place among the most important voices and producers of Cuba’s new musical generation.
With Destino, Dinza not only honors the road he has traveled but also defines a new direction in his musical journey.
