National Ballet of Cuba to perform in Costa Rica

The Cuban National Ballet, declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation, will perform in San José, capital of Costa Rica, on July 27 and 28.
Under the direction of Viengsay Valdés, the company will present several works from its repertoire at the Teatro Popular Melico Salazar, named after the world-famous Costa Rican tenor Manuel «Melico» Salazar Zúñiga.

The program includes «Dionaea», choreographed by Gustavo Herrera with music by Heitor Villa-Lobos; the solo «Muto» by Alberto Méndez, set to music by Edvard Grieg; the pas de deux «El Corsario,» in a version by Alicia Alonso based on the original by Marius Petipa, with music by Riccardo Drigo; and a classic of Cuban choreography, «Carmen,» by Alberto Alonso, with music by Georges Bizet, arranged by Rodion Shchedrin.

The cast includes the company’s principal dancers: Sadaise Arencibia, Anette Delgado, Dani Hernández, Grettel Morejón, Viengsay Valdés and Yankiel Vázquez, as well as prominent emerging dancers such as Ányelo Montero, Estefanía Hernández, Gabriela Druyet and Jorge Guerra, among others.
