Teatro Pálpito presents Las penas saben nadar

January begins for the Teatro Pálpito with the premiere of the monologue Las penas saben nadar, based on the original by Abelardo Estorino, winner of the National Theatre and Literature Prize, and starring the actress Valia Valdés, who is celebrating 36 years of artistic career on stage, radio and television.
Under the direction of Ariel Bouza, the troupe is celebrating its 30th anniversary with the revival of some of its emblematic titles and the premiere of the famous play by the Matanzas author, which the public can enjoy every weekend in January at the Café Brecht theatre, located on Calle 13, esquina a I, in El Vedado.
According to a press release, Las penas saben nadar is the story of an alcoholic actress who bursts onto the stage of the Monologue Festival without being programmed to perform French poet and playwright Jean Cocteau’s La voz humana amid laughter and tears.
In the new version, which will premiere as part of the programme dedicated to Cuban theatre, Las penas… proposes an updated interpretation of the text, not to redeem an actress with more or less talent, but to talk about loneliness, emotional loss and resilience.
Bouza has already staged Estorino’s Que el diablo te acompañe and La cucarachita Martina, so it is no coincidence that he is returning to the dramaturgy of this important Cuban playwright.
Tickets can be purchased before the performance.
