The Artistic Heritage of an Institution and the Work of Servando Cabrera Moreno

The National Council of Plastic Arts (CNAP) preserves one of Cuba’s most significant art collections, consisting of 542 works that trace the history, identity, and evolution of Cuban art from the 20th century to the present.

On May 28, marking the 102nd anniversary of the birth of the renowned artist Servando Cabrera Moreno, the CNAP invites the public to explore this collection through his work—particularly his iconic piece Habanera (1977), which is part of the CNAP’s permanent collection.

Cabrera Moreno is considered one of the leading figures in 20th-century Cuban painting and drawing. To celebrate this milestone, the exhibition Servando-Villalobo: la fragmentada unidad del universo will open this Tuesday at the Servando Cabrera Moreno Museum-Library in Vedado. Radio Enciclopedia will provide additional coverage in upcoming broadcasts.

The National Council of Plastic Arts features contributions from over 200 artists who have shaped Cuban art, showcasing a diverse range of works including paintings, photography, sculpture, engraving, mixed media, installations, video art, and performance pieces. The collection includes intimate works measuring 28 x 34 cm, as well as monumental installations exceeding two meters in scale.

In addition to Cabrera Moreno’s Habanera, the CNAP displays other iconic and contemporary pieces that highlight the richness and diversity of Cuban art. This collection serves as both a mirror of national identity and a bridge between the past and present—a legacy to be recognized, valued, and preserved for future generations.
