The National Folkloric Ensemble of Cuba celebrates its 61st anniversary

From May 19 to 21, the National Folkloric Ensemble of Cuba will present new performances to celebrate its 61st anniversary and pay tribute to its founders.
The event will take place in the Avellaneda Hall of the National Theater of Cuba, and the program will offer in the first part Ciclo Yoruba and in the second part En mi patio.
The use of Cuban songs and dances of ancient Yoruba origin and the atmosphere of mythological traditions will be recreated in Ciclo Yoruba.
The whole vital cycle of creation, maternity, full life, illness and death will be represented in a solemn and transcendental style, respecting the essences and imprinting them with modernity, the group said.
The work, with a libretto by the late maestro Rogelio Martínez Furé and choreography by Rodolfo Reyes, includes dances to the deity orishas Elegbá, Obatalá, Yemayá, Shangó and Babalú Ayé.
Meanwhile, En mi patio travels through different Cuban music and dance genres, from the most traditional to the most modern.
These will be expressed in songs and dances that evoke lucumí rites, sones, hawker’s cries, boleros and rumbas, expressed through the yambú, guaguancó and columbia, reaching contemporary rhythms such as the casino and the conga.
En mi patio takes place in a Havana tenement where its neighbors star in common moments of similar coexistence spaces, supported by scenes of costumbrista theater that enrich the exposition of the theme.
The performances have libretto and choreography by the maestro Manolo Micler, National Dance Prize 2017, and the director of the National Folkloric Ensemble of Cuba, the young and talented Leiván García.
