Tribute to filmmaker Daniel Díaz Torres at the Cinemateca de Cuba

The Cinemateca de Cuba has opened its September program with a tribute to honor the tenth anniversary of the death of renowned filmmaker Daniel Díaz Torres. The program includes the screening of his popular feature films, a documentary, and some of his newsreels.

Moreover, the Televisión Serrana production company will begin its 30th anniversary celebrations on the 10th of this month, featuring an extensive tour of its most famous productions.

The show dedicated to Díaz Torres started with La película de Ana, featuring notable actors like Laura de la Uz, Yuliet Cruz, Tomás Cao, Michel Ostrowski, Blanca Rosa Blanco, and Enrique Molina. Additionally, the event included the presentation of Noticiero Icaic Latinoamericano number 880, directed by Santiago Álvarez.

Daniel Díaz Torres worked as an editor of film reviews and articles for the country’s main press publications at the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry in 1968. He founded the International School of Film and Television (EICTV in Spanish) in San Antonio de los Baños, dedicating many years of his life to training young people. He was also a professor, deputy director, and head of the fiction department at the school, and gave workshops in European and Latin American institutions.

As a filmmaker, he won awards at festivals in Germany, Holland, Brazil, and Cuba. He was also awarded the National Cultural Prize and a prize in recognition of his remarkable contribution to Cuban culture, according to an article by Cuban film specialist Daymar Valdés.

To pay tribute to Daniel Díaz Torres, one can enjoy his films in the cinema and appreciate his sharp and creative sense of comedy, as well as the optimism that always characterised him.
