Tribute to José Martí Through the Work of Artist Juan Jorge Peoli

The exhibition Las tardes del Hudson. Bicentenario de Juan Jorge Peoli (1825-1893) is now open in the lobby of the Antonio Rodríguez Morey Information Center, located in the Cuban Art Building.

This showcase offers an opportunity to revisit the legacy of this key figure in Cuban colonial art, stated its curator, Delia María López Campistrous, the museum’s deputy technical director, as highlighted on the institution’s Facebook page.

The specialist underscored Peoli’s ties with José Martí in New York and the deep friendship they shared, a bond Martí himself documented in the newspaper Patria.

López Campistrous also recalled that in 1914, during one of the institution’s most challenging periods, Peoli’s family donated several of his works, which had greatly interested Martí.Now, the exhibition presents records of that donation alongside a selection of the artworks, emphasizing the painter’s impact both on the museum’s collections and in the broader history of Cuban art, the published report concludes.
