Uneac’s Proposal for Children in July and August

The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Uneac) has inaugurated a children’s program titled With the Hope of the World, a series of events throughout July and August designed to introduce children to a variety of cultural events. This initiative is dedicated to the 122nd anniversary of the birth of Nicolás Guillén.

National Visual Arts Prize winner Lesbia Vent Dumois welcomed the children to the Villa Manuela Gallery, which hosts the exhibition With the Brush of Others by stage designer Zenén Calero. Vent Dumois, who is also the vice president of Uneac, elaborated on the legacy of Cuba’s national poet, Nicolás Guillén, and the organization’s contribution to Cuban culture and society.

“It’s no coincidence that we’re inaugurating this event on Nicolás Guillén’s birthday,” Vent Dumois remarked. “Guillén also wrote for children. He created significant works and poems specifically for young audiences, and he collaborated with illustrators. These two dates coincide for Uneac because Nicolás was the first president of this institution. We’re dedicating this activity to children, not only to connect them with Zenén Calero’s wonderful work but also to use this exhibition as a pretext to highlight the contributions of other artists.”

In the Caracol Video Room, children enjoyed animated films produced by Icaic and Cuban Television, while the La Proa Theater Group presented the play Beware of the Dogs! which teaches lessons about love and caring for pets.

“We’re very happy to be part of this new project that will take place every Wednesday,” said Arneldy Cejas Herrera, Artistic Director of La Proa Theater Group. “It’s a beautiful project that combines visual arts, cinema, theater, and puppetry. Being here today proved that it’s possible. Anything that benefits children is always appreciated by them and their families.”

Joy and learning marked the first meeting of With the Hope of the World. Pilar and Rodrigo Acosta Iglesias, along with Jocelin Rodríguez Polo, shared how much fun they had and how they learned about visual arts, theater, cinema, and television.

Throughout July and August, Uneac will bring children closer to high-quality artistic events across various disciplines. With the Hope of the World is a cultural universe where creators, artists, and intellectuals will converge to contribute to the development of children’s skills and tastes.
