1974 films at 23 y 12 movie theatre in Havana

The Cinemateca de Cuba is showcasing films from the year 1974 in two parts this month. The first half will be shown from January 23rd to 14th in the main auditorium, while the second half will be shown from January 18th to 31st in the Charlot auditorium.

According to the Cubacine website, this special event will provide viewers with the opportunity to watch some of the most beloved films of that year, such as Presagio by Mexican director Luis Alcoriza and Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez. The script for the film was worked on by the duo for four months back in 1968, but it wasn’t until 1974 that it was completed.

The film won the Ariel Prize, which is presented by the Mexican film industry in categories like adapted screenplay and editing. It was also nominated for best film, best director, cinematography, and female performance.

Other films being shown in the cycle include Chinatown, which premiered in New York and showcased the talent of Polish-French filmmaker Roman Polanski in making a classic noir film with Jack Nicholson in the lead role.

Jacques Deray’s Borsalino and Company, starring Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo, is another film that will be screened in January, as well as Dino Rissi’s Profumo di Donna, which won the Best Film of the Year Award at the Italian Film Academy and the César for Best Foreign Film. It was also nominated for an Oscar in the same category.

Aside from these films, the programme for this month includes Fue leal para enemigos y para amigos traidor, which is the debut feature of Soviet actor Nikita Mijalkov, Mariscal del infierno, a Spanish film by León Klimovsky with a screenplay by Jacinto Molina, and Murder on the Orient Express, which is based on Agatha Christie’s novel of the same name and stars Albert Finney as detective Hercule Poirot, among others.
