The legacy of José Martí in the programme of the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana

The Office of the Historian of the City of Havana (OHCH) will dedicate its first cultural program in 2024 to José Martí. This will be in celebration of the national hero’s 171st anniversary of his birth. The OHCH has been working for several decades to reconstruct the city where the young Martí lived centuries ago.

In Havana, José Martí is commemorated throughout the year, but every 28 January, his birthday, is a special date. Activities will include the José Martí Day at the Birthplace Museum, which will be inaugurated on the 12th with a performance by the National Concert Band.

In the afternoon, there will be a meeting called «Sembrar ideas, sembrar conciencia» as part of the program against cultural colonization. It will involve young people from the José Martí Cultural Association, Havana and the Martí’s Youth Movement.

During the event, the audiovisual film «El sentido de la descolonización de la política cultural cubana» will be screened.

Eusebio Leal, a real follower of Jose Martí and an experienced interpreter of the codes that define and mobilize Cuban identity, is one of the passionate historians and researchers from a wide variety of disciplines who have studied the human dimension of the Apostle’s work.
