Diverse Program Marks Cuban Librarian’s Day

The Rubén Martínez Villena Public Library, located in Old Havana’s Historic Center, launched a broad program of activities this Monday to celebrate Cuban Librarian’s Day, culminating on June 10.

The week-long celebration includes bibliographic exhibitions and a series of cultural events under the banner of the Cuban Librarian’s Day Program.

Among the scheduled highlights is the awards ceremony for the “Protecting the Environment” contest, along with other initiatives aimed at engaging the public, according to Ana María Sánchez Rodríguez, a specialist in cultural programming at the institution.

Throughout the week, the library will host newly graduated librarians as well as seasoned professionals recognized with the Antonio Bachiller y Morales Seal of Merit. These honorees will be interviewed as part of an effort to document and share their professional journeys.

Several exhibitions will be on display, spotlighting prominent librarians in various fields of literature. On June 7, Cuban Librarian’s Day, the Literature Room will showcase works by renowned authors who also practiced librarianship, including Jorge Luis Borges, Stephen King, Rubén Darío, and Marcel Proust.

Toward the end of the week, the Rare and Valuable Collections Room will present a special bibliographic exhibit titled Antonio Bachiller y Morales: One of Cuba’s Most Illustrious Intellectuals, featuring works by the distinguished Cuban thinker.

In the Reference Section, visitors can explore the exhibit «La Villena y sus bibliotecarios,» which includes documents, photographs, and images chronicling the work of library specialists who have been awarded the Antonio Bachiller y Morales Seal. The exhibition also commemorates the 30th anniversary of the award’s first presentation.
