Carmen, Cuban and Universal, Returns with the Ballet Español de Cuba
The Ballet Español de Cuba, under the direction of Maestro Eduardo Veitía, returns to the Avellaneda Hall of the National Theatre of Cuba with Carmen. Cuba, its fresh take on the internationally renowned classic.
The performances, which began Friday, January 9, follow the company’s third tour of China, held from October to December 2025, which drew critical acclaim and enthusiastic audiences across 20 cities in 12 provinces, including the Guangxi Autonomous Region and Shanghai.
Carmen. Cuba is infused with distinctly Cuban flavors. Journalist Toni Piñera describes it as “an elegant and original piece, infused with rhythm, color, energy, and musicality that radiates pure Cuban spirit, breaking all borders.”
This Cuban essence is also evident in the soundscape. While the foundation remains the music composed by French composer Georges Bizet, Maestro Veitía integrates flamenco and Spanish influences, reinterpretations of the original score, and unmistakably Cuban touches. Among them, the standout is a magical moment featuring the iconic bolero Dos Gardenias by Isolina Carrillo, sung by the talented cantaora Chelo Pantoja, during the trio of Carmen, Escamillo (the Toreador), and Don José.
The Ballet Español de Cuba kicks off 2026—and celebrates its 39th anniversary—with this season, running for two weekends: January 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, and 18. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00 p.m., and Sundays at 5:00 p.m. (local time).
