Burrerías Returns to the Stage with Teatro La Proa

Within the framework of the National Theater Program “Marzo en Escena,” Teatro La Proa will present the play Burrerías at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, the 14th, and Sunday, the 15th of this month.

Featuring performances by Arneldy Cejas and Erduyn Maza, the production stages the encounter between two puppeteers as a pretext to tell fables about donkeys, reflecting on love, happiness, and tenderness, and condemning intolerance and the mistreatment of those who are different.

According to a note from Teatro La Proa, the play premiered in Bolivia in 2014 and has remained part of the company’s active repertoire since.

Blanca Felipe served as assistant director in the original cast, which paved the way for the production’s participation in events and festivals in Bolivia, as well as in Cuba, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic.

Erduyn Maza—who currently serves as the company’s artistic director—incorporated riddles, traditional songs, and texts by Juan Ramón Jiménez, René Fernández, and Jesús del Castillo when writing the play.

Burrerías features original music and arrangements by Mayito Gutiérrez and Aliesky Pérez, while costume, set, and puppet design, as well as staging, are by Arneldy Cejas.

Isabel Cristina López Hamze serves as theatrical advisor, while graphic design, illustrations, and photography are by Frida Padrón, Antonieta Loaiza, and Alain Lázaro Gutiérrez, respectively.

In Cuba, the production has toured widely, performing in schools, hospitals, daycare centers, theatrical crusades through mountainous regions, and communities affected by meteorological events.

The show has also traveled seven times to Mexico to take part in festivals and celebrations in the states of Yucatán, Campeche, and Puebla, as well as in Mexico City.

Last year, it was included in the program of several venues in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, as a prelude to the International Theater Festival for Children and Youth (FITIJ) 2026.

After this Havana run during the National Theater Program “Marzo en Escena,” Burrerías will return to Mexico next April to participate in celebrations marking Children’s Day.
