Museums, May Theme of the Cultural Program of the Historian’s Office

The Cultural Program of the Historian’s Office of Havana for the month of May is dedicated to the International Day of Museums in the historic center, which will be held from May 15 to 20, under the theme Museums, Sustainability and Well-being.

Activities will highlight the role of these buildings as institutions at the service of society and its development. The program will include workshops with recycled materials, exhibitions, lectures and other initiatives dedicated to the centenary of the Cuban sculptor and ceramist Marta Arjona.

Also in the news is the reopening of the José Nicolás de Escalera Gallery, located in the Santo Domingo Building.

There, visitors will find a renewed museological and museographic discourse and admire works of great patrimonial value, artistic richness and stylistic variety belonging to the collection of the Museo de la Ciudad.

Among the exhibits is the exhibition Learning by Doing, by the Cuban Workshop Schools, dedicated to the memory of the eternal historian Eusebio Leal Spengler; to Eduardo González Delgado, director of the Havana Workshop School until 2014; and to Roberto López Bastida, director of the Office of the Curator of Trinidad and the Valle de los Ingenios until 2003.

In the context of Africa Day, to be celebrated on the 25th, the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) will begin this week.

Once again, the Old Continent is in the spotlight as Havana closes its European Month and launches the seventh edition of the French Cultural Month on the theme of Inspirational Women.

The Victor Hugo House will host a cycle of audiovisuals on women, as well as films such as Jean-Luc Godard’s Vivre sa Vie and Olivier Dahan’s La Vie en Rose.

On the last day of May, the French-Cuban duo of violinist Manon Galy and pianist Jorge Emilio González Buajasan will give a concert at the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.

Verses will take over the village of San Cristóbal with the Havana International Poetry Festival, which will hold its 29th edition in the historic center from April 22 to 27.
