A new exhibition to appreciate the work by the artist Gabriel Cisneros

The artist Gabriel Cisneros opened a solo exhibition last Friday in September at the Servando Gallery in Havana. The exhibition is entitled El Prestidigitador.

«The exhibition includes six figurative sculptures. It will remain at the gallery until 10 November,» the artist told Radio Enciclopedia.

«It is inspired by my long collaboration with Villa Soberón in the creation of commissioned and commemorative statuary works. This exhibition uses traditional statuary as a visual support,» he adds.

In essence, Cisneros is using the traditional codes of statuary, «twisting them, putting them in different positions to the way we are used to seeing this type of work; and, of course, from there the viewer will inevitably find some strangeness,»

«The discourse, the story behind each piece is articulated out of this strangeness. Each piece tells a story. Each piece tells a way of seeing reality. In traditional statuary, we are used to seeing the works perhaps on top of a more epic story, perhaps with virtue in a professional sense. But my exhibition is about more intimate, more personal stories, and perhaps that is where a distinction is made in terms of commemorative sculpture,» he concluded.

Gabriel Cisneros, Las Tunas, 1990, is a 2015 graduate of the University of the Arts of Cuba. He won second prize in Post-it 6. This is a Cuban art competition for young artists. He has been a participant in various group and solo exhibitions in Cuba and abroad. His work has been the subject of collections in Panama, Mexico, the United States and Lebanon.
