Concert by the Lyceum Orchestra of Havana under the direction of Maestro Pablo de Pedro Cano

This week, the Spanish-Austrian maestro Pablo de Pedro Cano is working with members of the Lyceum Mozartiano Orchestra of Havana, culminating on Saturday with a recital by the ensemble, which he will conduct at the Oratorio San Felipe Neri.

The repertoire will feature works by composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Joseph Haydn, and Ludwig van Beethoven, as highlighted in the press release sent to Radio Enciclopedia.

This Wednesday, the distinguished musician gave a master class to piano students at the University of the Arts (ISA).

Pablo de Pedro Cano is a renowned Spanish-Austrian violist, born in Madrid in 1977. He studied viola with Thomas Riebl and Veronika Hagen at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg.

From 2003 to 2005, he served as the principal violist of the European Union Chamber Orchestra, performing in Europe, the United States, Asia, and South America.

Cano specializes in historical performance and is currently the principal violist of the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, Concentus Musicus Wien, Europa Galante, and the Collegium Vocale Gent. He is also a guest artist with the Kammerorchester Basel and the Orchestra of the 18th Century. Additionally, he is a professor of historical viola at the Royal College of Music in London.

He has recorded numerous CDs for Sony Music and Deutsche Grammophon. Chamber music is an exceptionally important part of his artistic career. He is the violist of the Edding Quartet, which focuses on performing classical and romantic pieces on original instruments.

In 2014, he was invited by Thomas Hengelbrock to teach students from Europe and Cuba in the postgraduate program of the Balthasar Neumann Academy, directing vocal and string tutti rehearsals.

As a permanent member of the artistic planning committee of the Balthasar Neumann Academy, he actively participates in the development of projects, dramaturgy, and innovative concert concepts, and continues to expand the Academy through international projects such as the CuE (Cuban-European Youth Transatlantic Academy).

He was a member of the Concentus Musicus Wien and had the privilege of working with Nikolaus Harnoncourt. As a specialist in contemporary music, he has worked extensively with renowned ensembles such as Proyecto Gerhard, the Austrian Ensemble for New Music, and Klangforum, as well as with composers and artists like Helmut Lachenmann, Hans Werner Henze, and Yvonne Loriod Messiaen.

Other biographical highlights include his role as a founding member of the Ensemble Delirio, a Vienna-based chamber music group dedicated to performing Austrian Baroque music. Cano also serves as a professor of historical viola at the Royal College of Music in London.

He has given master classes at the Conservatories of Salamanca and Burgos, as well as at the prestigious Saintes Masterclass (Poitiers), the Austria Baroque Academy, as part of the Lech Masterclasses, and at the Academy for Early Music Bruneck.

In his new path as an orchestra conductor, he aims to impart the experience he has gained over the years, working with maestros Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Thomas Hengelbrock, and Philippe Herreweghe.
