Cuban artists celebrate the 37th anniversary of the Asociación Hermanos Saiz

On 18 October, the Asociación Hermanos Saíz (AHS) celebrated 37 years of continuous work with young writers, artists, intellectuals and cultural promoters from all over the country.

One of the main activities to mark the anniversary was the official presentation of the Maestro de Juventudes Award in Havana, «to recognise cultural personalities who are true maestros because of the dimension of their works and their human qualities».

The National Authority of the AHS announced via digital platforms that this year’s winners are «the poet and cultural critic Waldo Leyva Portal, the teacher and choir director María Felicia Pérez Arroyo, the journalist and cultural critic Pedro de la Hoz González, the scenic artist Rubén Darío Salazar, the dancer and one of the jewels of the National Ballet of Cuba Aurora Bosch Fernández and the scenic designer Zenén Calero Medina».

As part of the celebrations, the first collective exhibition of the Santiago de Cuba Photographic Club «Tomás Padró» was inaugurated in Santiago de Cuba under the title Ojos de Isla (Eyes of the Island).

The exhibition, which offers «a different vision of each of the artists who reveal their passion for photography in these times», will remain at the Galería Oriente, which belongs to the Cuban Fund for Cultural Assets.

«Three of our artists from the Visual Arts section are taking part in the exhibition: Reydi Zamora Rodríguez, Marlon René Aguilera Fleitas and Edgar Brielo,» reads the Facebook page promoting the work of the AHS in the Hero City.

In the province of Granma, the date coincides with the events proposed by the Fiesta de la Cubanía, an initiative that takes place as part of Cuba’s National Day of Culture.

Writers Gabriel Castro, Daniela Tasé and Alexei Mendoza performed a poetry download and shared details of children’s literature created by the partners.

Similarly, the Provincial Centre for Books and Literature in Camagüey organised a meeting on Wednesday with students from the Álvaro Morell Pre-University Institute.

«The young writers Rosabel Pi González and Alejandro Muñoz Aguilera, who are in the process of joining our organisation, and Yoandra Santana, honorary member of the AHS Camagüey, participated, accompanied by the singer Reinaldo Rodríguez,» said the organisers of the activity on Facebook.

The same social media reports that on the day of the 37th anniversary, a large Cuban Youth Art Fair was held in front of the AHS headquarters in Pinar del Río, with music, dance, poetry and performances.

Since 18 October 1986, the AHS has brought together artists under the age of 35, paying tribute to the revolutionaries Sergio and Luis Saíz Montes de Oca, victims of the dictatorship imposed by Fulgencio Batista before 1959.
