Performing Arts Take Center Stage as Summer Season Gets Underway

On July 2, the José Martí National Library (BNJM) hosted the presentation of Librínsula, published by Ediciones Bachiller, in the Eliseo Diego Children’s and Young Adults’ Reading Room, officially launching the institution’s summer program for children and young people.

The summer season also got underway at La Rampa cinema with a themed costume party opening the Summer Workshops organized by the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC).

On the music front, Mexican composer Luis Pérez Sabido, Yucatán delegate of the Instituto Bolero México, met with students from the Jazz Band of the National Museum of Music at the Havana-based institution.

The first weekend of July will begin with Sábado del Libro in Old Havana, where the following titles by music historian and writer José “Pepe” Reyes Fortún will be available for purchase: Un siglo de discografía cubana, El Conjunto Casino, and El arte de Benny Moré. The books will be presented by Sonia Pérez-Cassola, director of the National Museum of Music, followed by a performance by the institution’s orchestra.

The Festín de Verano, dedicated to Capitán Plin on the 45th anniversary of the creation of the character by Jorge Oliver Medina, will be held at La Rampa cinema. Other Saturday attractions include the opening of a bibliographic exhibition of American literature published in Cuba at the BNJM, as well as Jorge Martell’s exhibition De Ícaro a Matías Pérez at the El Reino de Este Mundo gallery.

The performing arts will take center stage throughout the weekend with performances by the Argentine company Teatro Puro, presenting Liza y Orson under the artistic direction of Pablo Di Felice at Teatro La Proa. Meanwhile, Teatro Utopía will stage FK, fantasía sobre Frida Kahlo, directed by Reinaldo León, at El Sótano.
