The National Folklore Ensemble of Cuba prepares the piece Comunidad

Comunidad (Community) is the title of the piece that the National Folklore Ensemble of Cuba is preparing to celebrate the 61st anniversary of the group, dedicated to the Congo dances and songs of Bantu origin that arrived in Cuba. They are also known as the Palo, Garabato, Yuca, Macuta dances and the Maní dance, which has almost disappeared.

This was confirmed in an interview with the portal Cubaescena by the young director Leiván García, who wants to convey a message of social reflection through this dance piece.

«(…) To show a message from the people, that we are in times where unity is important to live. We need to think about the other, which is also the reason for the name, because it advocates unity and emphasizes the importance of the human being in today’s society (…)».

Leiván specifies that they will be using the music of maestro Alejandro Falcón, who is already a true ally with his album Monte Espiritual, which for the first time fuses contemporary music with Congo music. «We will use the original yuca drums. We are also combining literature with the story Demonio sobre césped cortado by Taimí Diéguez, a young Cuban playwright.»

«We are taking risks and experimenting, says the young artist, but with the hope that the result will be satisfactory, because, as Leiván says, the play also aims to promote the folklore of 2023.»
