Call for Academic Forum “Art and Recycling for Sustainability”
The Municipal Culture Authority of Plaza and the José Antonio Díaz Peláez Experimental Center for the Visual Arts have announced a call for the academic forum “Art and Recycling for Sustainability.”
This theoretical event is being held in connection with the National Festival of Ephemeral Art, a tradition launched on June 6, 2003, at Mariana Grajales Park in Havana’s Vedado district.
The forum seeks to promote collaborative reflection on public interventions using recycled materials, encouraging sustainable practices without a competitive focus.
Submissions of 15–20 minute papers are welcome, exploring theoretical and practical intersections in both Cuban and global contexts. The thematic areas include: theories of sustainable art, focusing on the aesthetic reuse of waste; creative recycling in performance, including techniques using plastics, cardboard, and textiles in collective processes; ecological impact of contemporary Cuban art, highlighting community-based contributions; and art education and sustainable practices, examining the institutional role in community training for recycling.
Alongside the forum, a fair will be held featuring participation from students, professionals, and families. Activities will include sculptures made from recycled materials, collaborative sustainable installations, children’s workshops on reuse, and performances centered on material transformation.
The fair will showcase site-specific interventions, workshops, and performances using recycled materials, and will be open to students, amateurs, and families.
Interested participants must submit their proposals (a 300-word abstract, a brief CV, and visual documentation of previous works) to dmcplazarevolucion@gmail.com by May 20, 2026, the submission deadline.
The selection committee will announce the results on May 31. The event will take place on June 5, 2026, at the Center’s facilities and surrounding areas.
