Presentation of a book on hereditary ataxias in Cuba

A book about the experience of the Centre for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias (Cirah, known by its Spanish acronym) will be presented at the Fayad Jamís bookshop on calle Obispo in Old Havana on Monday.

The book entitled Las ataxias hereditarias en Cuba. Biografía de un proyecto, is written by Dr Luis Velázquez Pérez, founder of the institution and current President of the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

The book analyzes the studies on this disease in Cuba, its global historical background, the experiences with patients and their families, and the advice given to both for the diagnosis and control of the disease. The book presentation will take place on January 15, Cuba’s Science Day, during which Velázquez Pérez will discuss this work with journalist and critic Fernando Rodríguez Sosa; it is published by Editorial Científico-Técnica.

Luis Velázquez Pérez is a Specialist in Clinical Neurophysiology and a Grade II Specialist in Neurology. He has received awards, including the Carlos J. Finlay Order and the Georg Foster Prize from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany.
